Patricia Hoogervorst, The Greenery:

"Sweet Sensation" seem to sell themselves"

New Sensations and The Greenery made the average price for Sweet Sensation in the season of 2011/2012 known a month ago. A large number of retailers have included the club variety in the assortment. The average price for the Sweet Sensations is €1.22 per kg. The highest average price for the size 75-80mm is €1.38 kg. The production of the red blush pear compared to the season of 2010/2011 has doubled. On the basis of the acreage, we expect the coming about 3 to 3.5 million kg and in stages we will go for 15 million kg. Said Patricia Hoogervorst from The Greenery.

Despite the price pressure of the current pear market the prices for Sweet Sensations have been on the same level as last year."This strengthens our belief that we have a good variety and a strong concept in our hands that provides added value for both grower and retailer. Because the pear stands out in the 'green' pear shelf we have noticed that the pear is selling itself. The logo, the taste experience and the look of the pear fit well together and that helps a lot." The fact that the retailers have commented that it is a shame they sell according to her says enough. "We have trust that our pear is going to get a permanent spot on the shelf.

The Greenery strives for an all year round availability of Sweet Sensations. Besides Holland the pear is also planted in Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. At the moment there are also being planted in Argentina. "It will take a few years until there will be commercial volumes from the Southern Hemisphere and we can deliver the pear all year round", declares Patricia. "Together with other trading organisations we realise that having no club varieties on the international fruit market is just unthinkable. We expect that the position of these varieties in the shelves will grow." Around the club varieties The Greenery provides mutual cooperation and exchange of knowledge between growers. To achieve this The Greenery works closely with research institutes and varieties owners.
