Peter Maes, Zeghers

"EU: "Lemon market is calm; prices right"

"At the moment the lemon market is calm", says Peter Maes of Zeghers. "This is normal for this time of year. The demand is calm and the prices are between 70 and 90 cents, depending on calibre and packaging type. These are the right prices." The importer indicates that more lemons came from Spain this year. "Overall, Spain had a big harvest this year. This influences the market, of course, and the prices." The trader says that the quality of the lemons is good.

"The Primofiori is coming to an end. This will continue for a week or three", he continues. "We're slowly switching to the variety Verna. We will have the Spanish ones in the assortment until June. The Argentinian ones will arrive in mid May, so these supplies will cross each other."

Maes expects that the lemon market will stay stable for a while. "It's calm for a lot of products at the moment. Only the pineapple market pulled up a bit for us this week."
