"We're happy with America as buyer."

Peru: FCE Export to increase export avocados

The Peruvian avocado season has just started. "We started at the beginning of February and the prices for the growers are very good", says Diana Sajami Tavára, managing director of FCE Export. "The avocado's are also great quality." Diana expects a good season with higher export volumes than last year. "The expectations for the export to America are especially high."

FCE Export is specialised in the export of Peruvian avocado's and collaborates closely with a specially selected group of growers. The director indicates that the American market opened last year. "This had never happened before, and so we had a nice new market to offer to our buyers. We expect the export volume to this country to increase again this season."

Isn't there a lot of competition in the export of avocados to the US?
"There are of course multiple suppliers and America itself supplies avocados. But Peru is right in a good period that connects to other seasons and the demand is good. For a really big market was added. In Peru the planting has been increased and we expect a big area extension in the coming years. We will definitely need it to supply this big new market to the max." A part of the harvest is also sold in Peru itself. "At home the avocado is a integral part of our kitchen. Especially the variety Fuerte is popular there and good prices are received for it."

"In Europe we notice that the competition with South-Africa is becoming more intense. It's expected that more volumes will come from there this year. We're happy to have America as a buyer, so we're not too dependent. We expect to receive good prices." According to Diana the quality differences between Peruvian and South-Africa is minimal. "We're both in the higher segment and supply a good quality."

The exporter says that there are developments in the area of new markets. "It's possible that Asia could become a new attractive buyer. For now we don't see any possibilities there, mainly due to distance and costs. Flying is too expensive and sailing takes too long. For now we'll export to Europe and the US."
