"Jan Vanhuyse: "Margins remain too low"

"Banana prices have been at higher level for a while"

According to Jan Vanhuyse of the Belgian wholesaler of the same name the banana trade is still doing well. "Prices have been on a higher level for a while. For the greener ones (off vessel) the price is between 14 and 16 Euro. Unfortunately the margins for us are, as always, too low," as per the entrepreneur. Furthermore it is not the weather, which influences the market situation for bananas. This has been reasonably stable."

Jan mentions that prices are normal for the time of the year. "In the first months they are always a little higher than at other times. If that were not so, it would be a real problem. Now the importers must make their money." The wholesaler explains, that it is difficult to assess 'ideal banana weather'. "But on the other hand it is a product which is eaten all year round."
