"Jan van der Lans: "Next week first New Zealand onions"
White onions from Mexico at Van der Lans International
Van der Lans International, NL receive white onions from Mexico every week. The white onions, which are difficult to grow in the Netherlands, are according to Jan van der Lans especially sold to the South European countries. "In countries such as Italy France, but also Russia, they really appreciate the white onion."
Of course it remains a niche-product and volumes cannot be compared to those of the green onions we offer, but we have weekly arrivals," Jan says. "We start with white onions from Mexico and later on change to white Australian onions, which are also a little stronger. These white onions are mainly bought on the grounds of quality, appearance and taste and as a result there is not much trouble with a market price!"
Next week the first New-Zealand onions will arrive at Van der Lans. "The growing season in New-Zealand is a lot better than last year. The plants are of first class quality. The yellow onions are a lot coarser and we hope that they will be a welcome addition to the market. But with the present weak market situation in Europe, nobody is pushing, mainly because of the low prices. Consequently we are increasing volumes slowly. The large volumes will only arrive later in the season."
"Also we expect to receive New-Zealand red onions before the end of March. The prospects of the red onion market are a lot more positive. Leading German customers have already entered into contracts with us." Next week more news about the new crop from the Southern Hemisphere at this specialised importer.
