"How does a big town feed itself?' This is the main theme of the exhibition. From an oil painting to a video installation, the exhibition leads its visitors through the history from the 1860s, through the years of the war to current times. In it the food handling of the people of München and the development of the Großmarkthalle are the focus.
Even most München people don't know much about the market hall in the part of the city known as Sendling. Yet it has been there writing local history since the 14th of February 1912. The Großmarkthalle München is the working and living place for over 100 employees and around 3000 traders. From 27 to 90 years of age: they all meet here to trade and bargain.
The Großmarkthalle München is an old and successful town institution. People want to keep the market hall preserved, although it was determined in 2008 that it has to be refurbished. The cost of this would be around 125 million Euro. According to Gerhard Harter, the deputy manager of the Großmarkthalle, the decision by the city council about whether to refurbish or to build a new building, as Harter suspects, will be made at the end of the year.
