Italy: slight recovery in carrot price, but likely to be only temporary

During Fruit Logistica 2012, FreshPlaza met Massimo Pavan, marketing manager of Pevianifrutta for Italy. The company trades carrots all year round, among other vegetables.

The cold wave in the last few days contributed to a slight increase in the production price of carrot, from EUR 0.17 to 0.20. "It's cold comfort given the unsatisfactory trend of prices recorded in the current campaign. There was an overproduction of summer carrots, harvested in September and October 2011. Now we can see the consequences of this" Massimo says.

This year, although fewer carrots are planted, Pevianifrutta has to settle for very low prices for its carrots. Consequently, harvest activities are slowed. "In the cultivated area in Fiumicino (near Rome) we harvested only 30% of production."

Increase in prices is thus insufficient because they are caused by temporary factors.
