Germany: Strawberries still on the side line

Strawberries are still a side product in the fruit assortment at the moment. The German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) recently said this is mostly noticed by the rather low demand in the food trade and the wholesalers.

Besides the fact that it's still early in the season, it's mainly the quality, the initially lacking aroma and sometimes rather solid flesh, which is decisive in the restrained buying attitude. The demand only increases through discounted prices. Traditionally there are always more discount prices in the beginning of February, but the market could change quickly in the coming weeks. At the moment the available amounts at wholesalers are too great, which means the average wholesale price for Spanish strawberries has decreased in week 5. How much the cold in the Mediterranean area has effected the backorders, is still unknown.

Since week 3 of this year there have been more discount actions in the food trade with Spanish and Moroccan strawberries. In some offers strawberries are even being sold for less than one Euro per 250 grammes. In week 5 strawberries are on offer at 7 German chains and regional shops.
