European crisis reduces Brazilian grape exports

Grape producers in the São Francisco Valley are bitter about losses related to the economical crisis in rich countries. A big exporting region by tradition, the area saw fruit shipments being reduced by 27.9% over four years, resulting in a production restructure, changing varieties of produced grapes, a reduction in the planted area and a bigger focus on the internal market. In the process exports, that once represented 60% of the production, dropped to just 25% last year.

On the other hand, with a bigger income, Brazilians started consuming more and more added value products, like the seedless grape. At Ceasgesp, the biggest food hub in Latin America, sales of seedless varieties grew 271.8% in the last five years.
