Fruit is destined to US, Japan and the Netherlands

Brazil: Farmers are happy with cherry production and prices

In the four hectares of the Celmira Igaki Farm, in Petrolina, Pernambuco area 33 tons of azarole per hectare are collected each year.

Farmers cultivate four varieties of fruit, with a quick production cycle. The fruit usually becomes ripe within 40 days.

Azarole produced in the Celmira farm supplies the internal and external markets. "It goes to Japan, the United States and the Netherlands", says the producer.

According to the Company of São Francisco and Pernaíba's Valleys Development, the municipality has almost 1,300 hectares destined for azarole production.

São Francisco Valley is one of the biggest azarole producer in the country. During the harvesting period, production is quite profitable. A 20 kg fruit box is sold at R$22.

Azarole's harvest is done manually, the fruit is selected and must be gathered in by April.

The fruit is small, but with a quite high nutrition value. It doesn't matter if the fruit is ripe or not, as the azarole has a sure sale. "The green fruit has almost double the Vitamin C of the red fruit, although is not right for juices as its flavour is much more acidic", explained the nutritionist Verônica Plácido.
