Chile: Kiwi export volumes are falling compared to 2010

Upon completion of week 44, there was a total shipment registration of 179,662 tons, 2% less from the previous season, of which which 97% corresponded to the Hayward variety.

After the kiwifruit export season in Chile finished, the Kiwi Committee, an organization formed by FEDEFRUTA, reported the main aspects that characterized the 2011 season through Andrea Betinyani´s analysis, Department Manager of Decofrut information.

As explained by the executive, the season was characterized by a lower volume of exports compared to 2010, upon the completion of week 44 there was a total of 179,662 tons of shipments (-2%), of which 97% corresponded to the Hayward variety (173,819 tons).

"Standing out in this season's decline is exports to Europe, a market that, despite being the main destination of Chilean kiwifruit, recieved 8% less volume compared to 2010. However, it is important to point out that within Europe, the Russian market growth, which increased its imports by around 11% over the previous year," said Betinyani.

Regarding exports to the U.S., Betinyani said that they also fell (-3%), as for Latin America, second largest market for Chilean kiwifruit, their imports increased by 3% compared to 2010. "Within this region, we must point out the sustained growth of Colombia, Mexico and Argentina, while Brazil showed to be stable this year, remaining the main destination for Latin America," said the executive.
