NZ apple growers consider viability of exports to Australia

New Zealand apple growers are working on an export business plan to see whether it will be financially viable for them to export fruit across the Tasman. Biosecurity Australia has rejected the latest appeals by Australian growers who are concerned about the possible threat from the bacterial disease fire blight and did not want NZ apples brought into Australia.

Pipfruit New Zealand chairman Peter Beaven says it now remains to be seen whether the NZ apple growers can comply with Australia's stringent quarantine protocols. "What we want to do now is to actually develop the management plan, the set of protocols that will enable us to export apples to Australia, admittedly under these incredibly difficult protocols," he said.

"We want to give our industry the opportunity to see if they can make this work. "I don't think they can, I think it's probably uneconomic." Australian apple growers may challenge the ruling in court.
