The scab-resistant apple variety Wursixo was given the brand name 'Kick!' yesterday. This was announced at a special meeting of Fresh Forward and TreeQuattro in Huissen. This selection has been on the market in Norway since 2021 under the brand name Eden. As of today, the apple is available in the EU as Wursixo Kick!, NFO reports.
'Kick!' can be harvested in mid-August, around three to four weeks earlier than Gala. According to Fresh Forward, this makes it "a scab-resistant alternative to Delcorf and an ideal apple to start the season with."

The pinkish-red striped bi-coloured apple produces medium-sized fruit with a fresh, sweet-sour flavour. The variety is scab-resistant, mildew-tolerant, and moderately susceptible to fruit tree canker. A point of attention in cultivation, according to Fresh Forward, is balancing young plantings as quickly as possible (production management). This is to minimise potential stress-related problems such as turniness and glaziness.
There are currently 30 hectares of this summer apple in Norway, and the first plantings will be established in the rest of the European Union in the coming years.

Trees are now available under an open concept and can be ordered through TreeQuattro. According to Stephan Geerlings of Fresh Forward, any grower can plant the trees and use the brand name Kick! plus the logo at no additional cost. "The one-time licence per tree will be charged via TreeQuattro's billing," he said.
