Next week (week 31), the new Belgian summer apple variety Ziola will be harvested. The variety was developed by Zouk, a sister company of Boomkwekerij Johan Nicolai, which focuses on innovation in apple and pear breeding. "This variety ripens two weeks earlier than Delbare, currently the most popular summer apple on the market. We are seeing strong interest in this new generation of summer apples," says Laura Nicolai.

The variety clearly meets market demand, as its entire crop has already been purchased by Belgian retailers Aldi and Colruyt. "The quality of last season's apples is now visibly declining, and consumers are eager for the new season. Ziola is perfectly timed to meet that need," Laura explains.

The acreage of the new variety is still limited, with just 2.5 hectares in commercial production. "We are now entering the second growing season, and the trees are carrying a promising crop. We expect a yield of 30 tonnes per hectare. Ziola is a highly productive variety and also offers a crisp, juicy, fresh-sour taste. It's scab-tolerant too," says Laura. "In addition, Ziola is an easy variety to grow and delivers good returns."

"We have conducted trials with Ziola across various European climates, from Norway to Spain, and what's remarkable is that the apple colours well in all conditions. Summer apples often struggle with colouring due to warm nights, but that's not an issue with Ziola. This has led to interest in the variety across Europe, from north to south."

"Fruit growers have faced difficult years recently, but when they see the planting, they become convinced of Ziola's potential. This Friday, we will welcome another large group of Belgian growers to the orchard for an introduction. It will be an open variety, allowing everyone to grow this summer apple," Laura concludes.
