Te Mata Exports is currently the only licensed marketer exporting Cosmic Crisp apples from New Zealand. The company works closely with selected growers to manage quality and supply. Most of the Cosmic Crisp crop is grown in Hawke's Bay, with a smaller volume coming from Canterbury. Te Mata is also in discussions about potential new plantings in Gisborne, as part of its long-term growth strategy.
There are currently around 40 hectares of Cosmic Crisp in commercial production. Te Mata Exports holds the licence to plant up to 150 hectares, with a target to reach that full hectareage by 2030.

"Additional plantings are underway and more orchard blocks will come into production each year," said Sarah McCormack, CEO at Te Mata. "This steady increase in supply reflects growing demand and the strong performance of the Cosmic Crisp variety in export markets.
© Te MataHawke's Bay experienced one of its best growing seasons in recent years. Spring conditions were particularly favourable, with good yields and overall tree health.
"The quality of Cosmic Crisp this season has been outstanding. Growers have reported strong yields, good sizing, and excellent colour. The fruit has held its firmness and pressure well, which is one of the hallmarks of the variety. Pack-outs have been very encouraging, with a high percentage of export-grade fruit. The clean and strong colouration seen this season has contributed to a high pack-out rate.
Export Markets
This season, Te Mata Exports is mainly shipping to Japan and Taiwan.
"These markets have shown a lot of early interest in Cosmic Crisp and provide a good platform for the volumes we have available. Japan continues to be a growth market, with initial volumes shipped this year receiving positive feedback. Taiwan is also an exciting prospect, with strong retailer interest ahead of their first arrivals this year. While Vietnam was one of our key destinations last year, softer economic conditions have led us to redirect some fruit into other markets this season, to support grower returns.

Shipping and logistics
"Shipping and logistics have remained challenging this season. Early on, limited equipment availability created delays, and as the season progressed, congestion and extended transit times became more of a concern. These disruptions are never ideal, particularly when servicing our customers. Fortunately, Cosmic Crisp is a variety with excellent storage and shipping characteristics. Its firmness and shelf-life help mitigate some of the risks associated with longer transit times, allowing the fruit to arrive in good condition even when logistics are difficult."
