China leads global mushroom exports at 47% share

China dominated edible mushroom and truffle exports in 2024, entering the global market with $242 million, according to data from China's Customs Administration. This amount positioned China with a global export share of 47.1%, marking a rise from 2022's 42.1% share.

Edible mushrooms offer umami flavors for various dishes such as soups and pastas, while truffles provide an intense aroma and are used raw on hot dishes. In 2024, other exporters in the sector included the Netherlands with $70 million, Poland and South Korea each with $36 million, and Italy contributing $16 million to the market.

The Belt and Road Initiative, an important strategy for China, plays a role in expanding opportunities for the edible mushroom sector. The Proposal for Cooperation for Edible Mushroom Industry in Belt and Road Countries was launched by the China Edible Mushroom Association back in April 2016. The initiative intends to foster growth through enhanced communication and cooperation among participating countries.

In nations along the Belt and Road, the practice of consuming edible mushrooms has historical roots, although technology for cultivation remains underdeveloped, with a focus on varieties like the Shuangbao mushroom. The Chinese company Farmmi, involved in the production and distribution of mushrooms, sees the Belt and Road Initiative as a pathway for modernization and growth. Farmmi highlights that this plan supports regional cooperation, hallmarked by the joint development of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Route.

Beyond economic benefits, the initiative seeks to enrich cultural exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, and advance global stability. Farmmi emphasizes that these efforts could manifest as shared industry advancements, thereby contributing to regional growth and cooperation.
