In 2025, the Netherlands cultivated over 83,000 hectares of ware potatoes, marking an 8.6% increase from the previous year. This is the first time since 2000 that ware potato acreage has exceeded 80,000 hectares. According to provisional figures from the 2025 Agricultural Census by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the total area used for potato cultivation surpassed 164,000 hectares. Alongside the growth in ware potatoes, seed potatoes and processing potatoes also expanded by 5.9% and 1.9%, respectively.
A shift in cultivation trends is evident, with a declining share of processing potatoes and a growing focus on ware potatoes. Currently, less than 25% of potatoes are used for processing, down from a steady 30% in previous years. Around half of the potato crop is designated for direct consumption, while approximately a quarter is used for planting.
The seed onion sector also recorded growth in 2025, reaching a new high of 33,200 hectares, up 3.6% from the previous year. This increase is largely due to a 35.6% rise in red seed onion cultivation. Despite a slight 1.8% decline, yellow onions remain dominant, accounting for 81.1% of seed onion output. Meanwhile, areas planted with second-year and plant onions decreased by 2.5% to 6,000 hectares.
