Potato Market Report 28th May:

Weather lifts UK potato demand and crop hopes

A change in the weather is expected to boost home consumption of potatoes. Consumption so far this year has been lacklustre, with the recent hot weather contributing to weaker demand. The bank holiday weekend is also anticipated to increase demand in the food service sector. Recent rainfall has been welcomed by growers, improving crop conditions.

More Premier and Home Guard varieties are entering the market this week, and early reports indicate good demand.

In the UK, conditions remain very dry in many areas, and growers are irrigating where possible — in some cases for over a month. Regarding the market situation, sources report stronger demand this week from major retailers. However, demand in the catering sector has yet to return to pre-COVID levels and remains similar to last year. Across Europe, prices for fresh market potatoes are holding steady for top-quality product.
