The price of fruit is key to deciding which supermarket to buy from

Aldi increased its fresh food sales by 23% in 2024

In 2024, Aldi increased its fresh food sales in Spain by 23%, consolidating its commitment to this category. According to Kantar Worldpanel, the prices of these products were 12.5% lower than the industry average, allowing a saving of 258.16 euros compared to the average market basket. The chain, headed by Valentín Lumbreras, has achieved a market share of 1.5% in fresh produce, +0.2 percentage points higher than in 2023, offering close to 500 references, including more than 170 fruit and vegetables.

The frequency of fresh food shopping at Aldi has grown by 6%, reflecting a change in consumption habits. Hugo Liria, Head of Research at Aldi Spain, says: "Spaniards as a whole spend 40,216 million euros on fresh produce, which accounts for around 43% of their annual food spending." Every week, Spanish families spend around 40 euros on fresh produce, 23 euros of which are spent in supermarkets, which leads sales with a 58% market share, ahead of specialists and hypermarkets.

Consumers spend 2,098 euros annually on fresh produce, almost 1,200 euros of which is spent on supermarkets. This increase is attributed to good value for money (58%) and the convenience of buying everything in one place (54%). However, Spaniards buy three kilos of fresh produce each time they shop (9% less than three years ago) and have a shopping frequency of three to four times a week (-1.8% compared to 2022).

Value for money is the consumers' top priority when buying fresh produce, with 72% preferring it. Price has gained importance, going from 44% three years ago to 51% today, equaling quality as the second most relevant factor.

Fruits and vegetables are the most purchased products, accounting for 63% of the total fresh basket. 85.4% of consumers stress the importance of a varied assortment when buying fruits, and 83.3% when buying vegetables. The price of fruit is key in deciding which supermarket to buy from, as it is the category most influenced by price. "Aldi is the supermarket in Spain with the best development in the fruit and vegetable category," Hugo Liria stated.
