Thailand boosts agricultural exports with 7 strategies

The Commerce Ministry in Thailand has launched seven strategic measures and 25 action plans to enhance the export of agricultural products globally. This initiative aligns with the Prime Minister's directive to address domestic oversupply and improve farmers' incomes.

Minister Pichai Naripthaphan stated that collaborations are underway with various agencies to improve production, marketing, exports, processing, and trade facilitation for a targeted 950,000 tons of fruit. There is also a campaign to increase domestic fruit consumption.

The Department of Internal Trade is working with major retail outlets to expand direct-to-consumer sales channels for farmers. Additionally, a partnership with fertilizer associations and the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry aims to reduce production costs by providing discounted high-quality fertilizer.

In trade policy, the ministry is expediting free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the European Union, South Korea, and ASEAN-Canada, with a goal to finalize talks by year-end. This would expand Thailand's FTAs to over 50 countries. Minister Pichai noted, "The success of existing FTAs is already evident," citing a 17.8% growth in Thai exports in March, reaching $29.55 billion.

Pichai also mentioned the revamped Thai SELECT program, now featuring an "Orchid Star" emblem, and efforts to prevent misuse of Thai export labels. The ministry is addressing tax evasion and scrutinizing high-risk product groups in collaboration with U.S. Customs.

Efforts against illegal imports and nominee businesses continue, with numerous legal actions taken and significant damages reported. The ministry has set a 2025 nominee inspection plan targeting numerous juristic entities.
