Canada has officially opened its market to fresh apples from Ukraine, starting in early 2025. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency approved Ukraine's export program after working with Ukraine's food safety authority (SSUFSCP).
To export apples to Canada, Ukrainian growers, packers, and exporters need to register with the SSUFSCP and be added to an official list. Their orchards and storage sites must be inspected to make sure they are free of pests, which Canada regulates.
After inspections, producers must submit an application letter and inspection report to the SSUFSCP.
Before any shipment leaves Ukraine, the Canadian importers must first secure an import permit from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Traceability is a key requirement. The SSUFSCP must be able to track any shipment to the packing and production site. Enterprises listed in the official export registry must also maintain strict controls during storage, packing, and transportation to prevent pest contamination.
"If a regulated pest is detected during export inspection or at the Canadian point of entry, the exporter's participation will be immediately suspended for the remainder of the season," the SSUFSCP warned.
