Ukraine registers new potato variety for industrial processing

Agrico Ukraine has officially registered a new Dutch-bred potato variety called Napoleon, explicitly developed for industrial use, such as chips, French fries, and powdered mash production.

"Based on the positive results of internal field trials in various soil and climate zones of Ukraine during 2023–2024, the demand from processing companies, the successful results of production tests at their processing facilities, and the global practice of successful use, the variety was officially registered in March 2025," the company stated.

Napoleon is a new variety not only for Ukraine but also for the Netherlands and other European countries. Its cultivation methods are still being studied and adapted to local Ukrainian conditions.

Field trials were conducted in Lviv, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, and Chernihiv regions. The mid-season variety has yellow skin, light yellow flesh, good storability, high suitability for processing, and resistance to viral diseases.

The company noted that Napoleon seed potatoes will be available for purchase in fall 2025.
