The apple harvest got underway at Wairepo Holdings Ltd in Lower Moutere, Tasman, New Zealand on 17th February, Simon Easton from the company said that overall it is looking like it will be a normal year with good fruit sizing.
"The growing season has been good, it was a bit cold in early January but fruit sizing is looking good so far. Early packouts have also been promising."
Wairepo grows apples on 65 hectares, the main varieties are Envy, Pink Lady, Ambrosia, and Jugala, these are for export to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Europe, and the UK. They also supply Heartland Fruit with Ambrosia for the domestic market.
"It is still early days, but the export markets are looking positive. The shipping situation is also looking more positive this season, but again it is early days."
Wairepo has just completed the installation of New Zealand's first Reemoon grader. "We have done our first few days of packing Jugala and all is going to plan as expected."
