Farmers in Volgograd Region, Russia, are facing a catastrophic drought that threatens to destroy a significant portion of their crops. Vegetable growers are left with no means to irrigate their fields, their only hope being rain, which is not expected shortly.
The situation in the fields of vegetable crops is becoming increasingly critical. Farmers are forced to use the last reserves of water from irrigation channels, but even there, only dirty, brownish liquid remains. Half of the yield on fields has already been destroyed due to inadequate irrigation, according to Yana Artamonova, an entrepreneur with 100 hectares of various vegetables. She doubts that the remaining crops will survive such heat without rain.
Despite the farmers' long-standing efforts and investments in irrigation equipment, the water supply system has proven incapable of providing the necessary amount of clean water.
The situation in the district raises doubts about the sustainability of the local agricultural sector also about the government's ability to provide the necessary resources for agriculture in the face of changing climate conditions.
Questions about accountability for the losses are being raised, but solutions are not yet visible on the horizon. Farmers, many of whom have been in business for decades, find themselves on the brink of ruin due to unforeseen natural phenomena.
