Greenta: three cousins from Apulia start an entrepreneurial venture

New company specialized in the production of earthworm humus

Based in Italy, the start-up company Greenta specializes in the regeneration of soil fertility through the production of natural fertilizers and the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices. Greenta's main business is to produce vermicompost, a 100% organic soil amendment which improves plant growth and yields.

The company is the brainchild of three cousins (pictured below) whose various careers in Italy and overseas brought them back to their hometown in Ruvo di Puglia, driven by the desire to respond to climate change and contribute directly to the sustainable development of their region.

"Vermicompost improves the assimilation of the nutrients of the plants, thanks to the millions of micro-organisms that it contains and that come from the digestive system of the earthworms", explain the three managers. Our customers use vermicompost when planting new crops (0.25 kg per seedling is enough), to supplement regular crop fertilization, allowing them to reduce the amount and cost of other mineral and organic fertilizers, and finally to supplement highly humified organic matter.

Geenta distributes humus mainly in Apulia, but also in a large part of Italy. Although the company has only been in business for about a year, the Apulian managers tell us that they have initiated strategies to penetrate European markets. "We grow our earthworms in litter, outdoors and in greenhouses on our own land. Once harvested, the humus is brought to our plant and logistics facility, where it is naturally dried, sifted and packaged in various grain sizes and formats (both solid and liquid). Vermicompost is a universal fertilizer and can be used by all farmers, professional and amateur, including those in organic systems. Vermicompost does not have an unpleasant smell, but rather an undergrowth smell (due to the presence of actinomycetes). The slightly alkaline pH does not risk "burning" the roots of plants if overdosed.

Two other complementary activities are also carried out, such as the research into new products for organic plant nutrition, adding value to agricultural by-products, and the promotion of agro-ecological practices through educational meetings, farm visits and participation in collective initiatives.

We asked the managers what it is that sets Greenta apart from other companies that produce organic plant nutrition products. "Our guiding principle is the understanding that each soil is unique in terms of structure, percentage of organic matter, crops, microclimate and agronomic practices used. Each grower has different needs, times and resources, so our approach is to meet the specific needs of our customers, establish a direct relationship and propose customized solutions. For those who can, we always invite them to visit the Apulian plant to see how we produce and to check the quality of the product sold. At the same time, we also offer targeted and timely remote assistance.
