Tomato producers expect a positive season in Catalonia

Caprabo, in collaboration with Espai Agrari de la Baixa Tordera, has celebrated the II Caprabo Gastronomic Conference of Tomato Proximity Products. The event was held at L'Illa Diagonal's #ChefCaprabo, in Barcelona.

The event coincided with the start of the tomato season, which takes place between June and October. In it, the Conca de la Tordera, one of the largest tomato producers in Catalonia, said they expected this would be a stable season. According to Josep Ferrer, manager of the Conca de la Tordera, "In recent years, production has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the invasion of Ukraine, inflation, and drought. This year, however, we expect a positive campaign that will last until October and with a recovery driven by the increase in tourism."

The event, which is part of Caprabo's Proximity by Counties Program, aims to value nearby seasonal quality products.

Less plastic in tomato packaging
Caprabo is the first supermarket to collaborate with the Conca de la Tordera by selling its tomatoes with 100% recyclable and compostable packaging made of paper, paper mesh, and bamboo. As part of its commitment, Caprabo projects it will sell about 250,000 kilos of tomatoes a year without the use of plastics in its packaging, thus saving 3 tons of plastic per year.
