Natura Alimentos brings Packnatur® cellulose net tubes to Mexico

"We focus on promoting and advertising agroecological practices"

Natura Alimentos supplies fresh fruits and vegetables to the three largest supermarket chains in Mexico and one in the United States. "Our focus is to be able to offer our customers* the best quality produce, in bulk or packaged in an environmentally friendly way. We want to work to reduce plastic waste, add value and promote environmental protection," says Alicia Weatherly, International Operations for Natura Alimentos and President of Tierra Selecta. The company has recently started using PacknaturĀ® cellulose net tubes from the Styrian Packaging Center (VPZ).

"Mexican consumers* are becoming increasingly aware of organic products specifically in terms of health and environmental benefits. We expect the organic segment to continue to grow and we are focused on promoting and advertising agroecological practices," Weatherly said. The Mexican market is very price-sensitive, he said, and biogenic packaging is not widely available. "Still, the good news is that individual regional governments have begun to take action to reduce single-use plastic packaging. We hope that with policy support, there will be a spread of biogenic packaging and increased consumer* awareness."

Weatherly points out that change starts with the grower and retailer. "We are passionate about reducing food packaging waste, so we are excited to use compostable nets in our product line. Currently, we are packaging prickly pears, sweet potatoes and garlic in PacknaturĀ® net tubes."
