"Minimal onion supply causing high prices"

The current onion market situation is challenging. "The supply from Belgium and the Netherlands is minimal, which makes things hard. There was supposed to be a new harvest from Egypt, but that quality was really disappointing," says Nathalie Sebrechts of Sebrechts Groenten en Fruit.

This Belgian family business assortment includes a range of wide fruit and vegetables, and onions are available in several varieties. "For now, we'll have to muddle along with the old crop. However, we've already started with the new Belgian spring onion harvest. It's difficult, though. There's demand, but the supply's very disappointing."

"There are new Chilean onions available," Nathalie adds. "Those are truly top quality but are in major short supply too. Those shortages mean onions are quite a bit more expensive than in other years." And market relief seems far off. "I expect the situation to eventually only be resolved when the new harvest from New Zealand starts," Nathalie concludes.
