Last week, Extremadura's Councilor of Agriculture, Rural Development, Population and Territory, Begoña García, paid a visit to the organic park of Haciendas Bio, in Mérida. She was accompanied by the Director General of Agriculture and Livestock, Antonio Cabezas, and the Director General of Agricultural Policy, Javier Gonzalo. During the visit, she highlighted the importance of the organic sector for Extremadura. She also talked about the growth it has experienced in recent years, as well as about its export orientation.
Begoña García said that there is currently a great demand for organic products and that the sector will play a bigger role in the future CAP. She also talked about the immersion in the new model marked by the European Green Pact and the Farm to Table Strategy.
More acreage, and also more companies
In this regard, she said that Extremadura has achieved a "very considerable" increase, not only in terms of hectares under cultivation, but also in that of marketing companies and organic food producers.
The line to follow, as stated by the Councilor, is to "continue supporting" the agro-food industry sector with aid such as agro-industrial incentives. She mentioned that of the more than 10 million Euro invested by Haciendas Bio, almost 2 million were funded by the Government of Extremadura. "We stand behind them and the sector invests," said Begoña García.
