Marco Bergman, Harvest House:

Dutch sweet pepper season really takes off"

At Harvest House, the Dutch sweet pepper season has really taken off. "We had a reasonable supply right away. And a good price formation for our Dutch sweet pepper growers. The demand for Dutch peppers has indeed been excellent from the start of production," says Marco Bergman.

"We took advantage of the problems many retailers experienced. That was with the Spanish product regarding availability and quality. They wanted to switch quickly to our Dutch product. That usually happens around week 15/16. But that demand came our way early. That was the main reason for the good pricing."

"At the same time, the supply and demand principle always applies. When there's more supply than demand, prices come under pressure," Marco continues. "Fortunately for our growers, the pressure hasn't been too great. We've also been able to maintain a reasonable price level."

"We're expecting demand for our sweet peppers to remain good. The true peak is yet to come. There will be some nice spring weather. That always results in great sweet pepper consumption. Of course, consumers want a tasty Dutch bell or pointed pepper. They use it for grilling or in a salad. It's a fresh counterpart to all that tasty stuff coming off the barbecue," concludes Marco.
