To convey its love for agriculture and care for the health of consumers, the environment, food safety and operators, a recently-created PO has decided to opt for a claim that is a play on words with its name: AmaMITAnto (literally: love me loads).
The PO is in fact called Mita and was set up on December 30th 2020 by President Luigi Nelli Tagliafierro. His purpose was to gather approximately 75 producers located in Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Lazio, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Apulia covering 1000 hectares in total in order to tackle current market challenges.
Although the PO was set up only recently, it boasts great experience in the fresh produce sector thanks to President Luigi Nelli Tagliafierro, who has been running a company with 60 years of history in the production of fresh produce and industry tomatoes.
In order to guarantee a healthy chain, Nelli Tagliafierro strongly believes in a strategy shared by all producers part of the PO.Collaboration with the market
Mita specializes in the production of fresh seasonal vegetables, 70% of which are destined to the domestic market, while the rest is exported to central Europe. In addition, 80% of the turnover is made thanks to sturdy relationships with the big retail chain, while collaborations with general fresh produce markets represent 20%.
Agriculture 4.0 as a sustainable choice
"We care a lot about respecting the environment, so much so that we favor a sustainable and rational management of production inputs. At the same time, our partners need to embrace this vision. We produce following strict integrated production specifications and employ useful insects applying agriculture 4.0 techniques such as probes, sensors and remote sensing with the help of Studio Di Cataldo in Foggia. This enables us to reduce our environmental impact and improve yields and quality."
Processing and logistics
"After being harvested, products reach our facility in Sarno (Salerno) where there are 6 processing lines. The produce is washed, packaged, weighed and labeled. We manage the cold chain with a potential of 100 tons a day and process and deliver the products 24/7."
Packaging
All kinds of packaging solutions are used to meet various client needs - wood, plastic and cardboard. "As we care a lot about the environment, we prefer using collapsible crates, which leads to considerable savings when it comes to reverse logistics."
Certifications
In order to meet the standards of a safe and sustainable agriculture, Mita has opted for the GlobalGAP certification and meets the requirements of Integrated Safety in Agriculture while also caring for the health, safety and welfare of its workers, in turn safeguarded by the Grasp module. Mita also holds the IFS Food certification for food safety based on aspects such as quality and client specifications.
Future challenges
"This year, we are aiming at extending the Sarno processing facility by 7,000 sq m. We will keep you updated."
