Supermarkets consolidate as the main engine for growth

The sale of organic fruits and vegetables in Spain grows by 15%

As announced by the Association of Spanish Supermarket Chains (Aces) within the framework of Fruit Attraction 2019, the sales volume of organic fruits and vegetables in the country's supermarkets has grown by 15% in the last year. In the supermarkets associated with this entity (Carrefour, Alcampo, Eroski, Lidl and Supercor) there are a total of 150 organic products available, compared to the 2,000 in the fruits and vegetables category as a whole. Organic products thus represent 7.5% of the total.

"Exponential growth is being achieved at the fruit and vegetable section in our stores. The shelf space has increased by 20% in the last five years. Organic products are already in the shopping list of any type of consumer, and this is mostly to thank to the joint effort of the industry and the producers," said Aurelio del Pino, president of Aces.

According to the Association, the supermarket format "consolidates" as the main engine for growth of the Spanish fruit and vegetable sector. The purchases of domestic products in the aforementioned chains are worth over 800 million Euro per year, and currently they collaborate with more than 700 supplier companies.
