According to Bulgaria's Agriculture, Food and Forestry Minister Dessislava Taneva, the number of organic farmers in Bulgaria increased twenty-fold between 2008 and 2018. There are 6,600 organic farmers now, and the areas under biological cultivation increased from 26,000 ha in 2011 to 162,000 ha in 2019.
On Friday, Miss Taneva participated in a forum entitled "The Food of the Future" in the Sts Cosmas and Damian Monastery during a visit to the Tsurnogorski Fair near in southwestern Bulgaria.
Taneva explained that there are 6,600 organic farmers now, and the areas under biological control increased from 26,000 ha in 2011 to 162,000 ha in 2019. "Bulgaria is at the forefront of European countries when it comes to the volume of organic produce," she noted.
In her words, the control system needs to be improved so that consumers may be confident in the product they choose. Taneva pointed out that her Ministry is looking for an opportunity to implement the Rural Development Programme with a focus on measures for agroecology and climate.
Agroberichtenbuitenland.nl reported that the Minister noted with regret that very few good experts are motivated to work for the public administration.
