Belgium: Consumers prefer supermarkets for organic products

In Belgium, six consumers out of ten buy their organic products exclusively in supermarkets. Only 8% shop exclusively in specialized stores and 5% buy directly from the producer.

A survey by the market research bureau Sirius Insight was published recently by Aplsia, the association bringing together the independents from all food distribution groups. The survey highlighted the place of Belgian consumers in relation to organic products.

The “figures show the role played by supermarkets in the democratization of organic food. Thanks to them, more and more people are turning to organic products,” notes Aplsia. Nevertheless, the offer from large retailers remains limited. The study finds that in Brussels, 32% of the consumers shop in supermarkets as well as in specialized stores. There are many organic shops in the city. Moreover, the number of organic consumers is higher in Brussels and Wallonia than in Flanders. As for the French, they tend to do their shopping by combining several different stores.
