Purchasing from the future becomes a reality for the large Swiss corporation

Migros relies on open sales of organic vegetables and fully automated shop concepts

Swiss chain Migros wants to double its sales of organic vegetables and fruits this year. This is intended to reduce the quantity of packaging. At the same time, they are also banking on a fully automated shop concept based on the 'Amazon Go' model. Not in classic Migros stores but in 'Voi' stores.

Doubling of open sales
Migros is working intensively on reducing plastic packaging, the company has announced, as part of the annual financial results press conference. In 2018, measures such as optimized packaging saved 270 tonnes of plastic. Director-General Fabrice Zumbrunnen announced that the open sales of organic vegetables and fruits will double in 2019.

Purchasing via an app
The shops of the future without traditional trays and also without self-scanning trays belong to the shopping of the future. The customer will be paying by app. According to a report in the Berner Zeitung, people should register via their mobile phone. When leaving the store, the purchases will be automatically deducted from their credit card.

However, Migros does not want to carry out the tests in large branches, but in smaller Voi quarter stores. There, it would be less complicated than in the Migros branches. In the US, there are already similar stores from Amazon, which work completely without coffers. Migros Aare boss Anton Gäumann told the newspaper that they are currently working on various project ideas for a concept without cash registers and self-scanning stations. It should become a kind of 'Voi to go'. When the first branch is opened, Gäumann did not yet want to give away.
