"Netherlands: "Low pear exports due to meagre supply and high prices"
"This all but eliminates the Russian market. Scandinavia is still buying, albeit with small volumes and some of the produce goes to Germany. There is a fair demand coming from the Canary Islands.” According to the trader, the quality of pears is decent. "Both the flavour and the shelf life are good. The pears are slightly more copper-like than last year, but nothing to write home about.”

Apple growers have had to cope with some serious rivalry from Poland in recent times. With pears however, the Polish seem to offer little in the way of competition. According to Kees this is purely due to the climate. "The mild climate that we have here, is extremely suitable for growing pears. That is why Poland will never be a pear country.”
