Germany: Elstar remains the favourite apple variety in Lower Saxony

In the German sate Lower Saxony the Elstar remains the star among apples. Around a quarter of the total apple area of the fruit companies in Lower Saxony is used for growing Elstar apples. Their area is 2,369 hectares. In total apples are grown on 8,163 hectares in Lower Saxony. Besides the Elstar, the varieties Jonagored, Red Prince, Braeburn, Jonagold, Holsteiner Cox and Boskoop are favourites. Together with Elstar they form 90% of the total apple harvest in Lower Saxony.

The variety unites the qualities of Golden Delicious and Ingrid-Marie, is very aromatic and juicy and also has a slightly sour flavour. Slightly sweeter, but still a bit sour, are the flavours of the varieties Jonagored and Red Prince.
