Austrian SPAR retail chain pays over €243,000 in bonuses to fruit and vegetable producers

SPAR is sending a strong signal for quality and regionality in domestic agriculture: in fall 2025, the new fruit and vegetable bonus for 2024 and 2025 was awarded for the first time. The premium will be paid out every two years in the future and is part of the newly revised SPAR Fruit & Vegetable Quality Program. A total of more than €243,000 in premiums was paid out to fruit and vegetable farmers throughout Austria this year.

Similar to the successful SPAR egg premium, which has been in place since 2010, the fruit and vegetable premium also aims to highlight and specifically promote outstanding quality work. Payment is made depending on the results of an independent inspection. Special recognition is given to companies that impress with clearly structured operations and a well-thought-out quality management system. For 2024 and 2025, a total premium of more than EUR 243,000 was paid out to 334 farms that produce fruit and vegetables for SPAR. Depending on the audit results, up to EUR 1,600 was paid out per farm.

"With the fruit and vegetable premium, we are sending a clear signal for quality and regionality. We see local producers as committed partners with whom we work together to ensure the highest quality for our customers. The producers do excellent work every day, and that deserves recognition and support," says SPAR CEO Markus Kaser.

The premium is based on the SPAR 5-point quality program for fruit and vegetables, which focuses on the following criteria:

  1. SPAR relies on controls: From the field to the packaging, all relevant steps are checked according to clearly defined specifications – with a focus on transparency and traceability along the entire value chain.
  2. As few pesticides as possible: SPAR promotes integrated pest management through robust varieties, monitoring, and targeted use of pesticides only when necessary.
  3. Highest quality standards: From variety selection and optimal harvest time to cooling and hygiene, strict guidelines apply to freshness, safety, and taste.
  4. Traceability and origin: The premium is awarded exclusively to Austrian companies, and the origin can be traced back to the individual field.
  5. Becoming better together: SPAR actively supports companies with advice and audits – for continuous development and exceptional quality work.

Strong partnerships for the future
The collaboration between SPAR and local fruit and vegetable producers is characterized by genuine partnership. Both sides pursue a common goal: consumers should receive fresh, regional products of the highest quality and full enjoyment. SPAR supports the farms with personal advice, clear and practical quality standards, and open, reliable communication. Short transport routes, the promotion of regional value creation, and traceable standards create a system that benefits both agricultural businesses and customers. This fosters long-term cooperation based on trust, appreciation, and the demand for the best quality and genuine enjoyment.
