"Conference is the most preferred pear variety by Moroccan consumers"

Moroccan imports of fresh fruit are marked by strong demand for pears, according to statements by Moroccan fruit importers. Among all pear varieties, consumer preference clearly goes to Conference pears, which dominate import volumes, El Yazid Bennouna, CEO of EB Fleg, reports.

The importer shares, "At EB Fleg, when my father started developing this variety on the Moroccan market more than fifteen years ago, we found it difficult to get consumers to accept it. The situation then changed radically, and today Conference is the most preferred pear variety by Moroccan consumers and has even become one of the flagship products of Moroccan fresh fruit imports."

"Moroccan consumers prefer this variety because it combines generous size, soft texture, and a pronounced sweet taste, which is hard to find in other pears. It is also appreciated by professionals thanks to its long shelf life and ease of storage. It's simply a good pear," Bennouna continues.

The Conference pear is now available in all Moroccan markets, Bennouna says. "It can be found on supermarket shelves as well as in other distribution channels such as wholesale markets."

The importer expects market growth to continue in 2026. He explains, "The consumption boom is accompanied by increased production in the countries of origin. The variety has a bright future and growing sales forecasts. It has become the default choice for consumers."

Conference pears are imported from several European countries, including Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Bennouna adds, "These different origins offer similar quality. At EB Flag, we mainly import them from Belgium and the Netherlands, with a preference for Dutch pears, which have a more appealing appearance."

The commercial window for this variety in Morocco has so far been mainly concentrated between August and January, according to the importer, who concludes, "This pear remains difficult to store out-of-season, and we try to sell it as quickly as possible, which opens the way for other competing varieties."
