Capsicum availability across Australian retailers has been reduced following weather-related production issues in key growing regions. Supermarkets report intermittent supply, with red, yellow, and green capsicums affected to varying degrees.
According to a Coles Customer Notice, "extreme weather in the growing regions" has impacted volumes of yellow and green capsicums. The retailer stated, "We are working closely with our growers to improve supply as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Store checks in Sydney showed limited volumes. One Coles outlet had a small quantity of green capsicums but no red or yellow. A nearby Aldi store had no capsicums available. Woolworths listed red and yellow capsicums as out of stock on its online platform.
Industry sources report that recent heavy rainfall in Queensland and a cool start to the season in South Australia and Mildura have affected yields of red and green capsicums. Capsicums are sensitive to wet conditions, and waterlogged soils have slowed growth and disrupted harvest schedules. Growers also face delays moving product between states due to increased biosecurity measures following disease outbreaks.
Supply is expected to remain irregular for several weeks.
Australian consumers have experienced multiple shortages across fresh produce categories in 2025, largely linked to extreme and adverse weather patterns in production regions. Earlier this year, sweet potatoes, strawberries, blueberries, spring onions, and broccoli all experienced reduced availability. Potato supplies have been affected by weather and the presence of Mop-Top virus, which has complicated crop management.
Retail prices have increased in line with constrained supply. At Coles, capsicums are priced at US$7.13 to US$8.44 per kilogram. Woolworths lists capsicums at US$1.62 each or US$5.16 per kilogram through The Odd Bunch range. Aldi is selling capsicums at US$1.47 each.
Growers and retailers report that recovery will depend on improved weather conditions, reduced disease pressure, and stabilised interstate movement protocols.
