Moldova’s table grape exports reach 30,000 tonnes as EU demand drives higher prices

By 20 November 2025, Moldova exported over 30,000 tonnes of table grapes from the current season, generating USD 32.52 million, according to the Association of Table Grape Producers and Exporters (APESM). The average export price stood at USD 1.08/kg, slightly below last year's USD 1.13/kg.

The European Union remained the strongest market, absorbing more than 16,000 tonnes worth USD 21.63 million. The average price on the EU market reached USD 1.34/kg, about 24% higher than the global average. In total, Moldovan grapes were shipped to 29 countries.

  • Romania: 9,954 t/USD 12.13 m
  • Russia: 6,009 t/USD 4.94 m

Lowest: Ukraine (0.67), Russia (0.82), Belarus (0.94)

APESM reports that summer and autumn weather conditions negatively affected grape development and quality. However, cold-storage facilities still hold significant volumes, expected to be exported by year-end. Producers are encouraged to accelerate sales to avoid quality deterioration under extreme climate conditions.

Moldova cultivates approximately 16,000 hectares of table grape vineyards, mostly small farms averaging 1.5 ha. The sector provides livelihoods for over 10,000 rural families in central and southern regions and remains the country's most exported agricultural product, with around 70% of production destined for foreign markets.

About 90% of plantations follow the traditional vertical trellis system, while the past seven years have seen the establishment of roughly 1,000 hectares of modern Pergola-type vineyards, capable of producing 35–40 tonnes/ha under EU standards.

The value of table grape production rose dramatically from MDL 213 million in 2000 to MDL 1.71 billion in 2024, an eightfold increase.

Between 2010 and 2025, Moldovan grapes reached 55 international markets, including the EU, Eastern Europe, CIS countries, Asia, the Middle East, and, for the first time, the United States.

Recent export dynamics:

2023: 84,500 t/USD 75.7 m (32 countries)

2024: 59,700 t/USD 67.1 m, with average price USD 1.13/kg

In early 2025, Moldova exported an additional 10,200 tonnes of grapes from the 2024 harvest stored in cold facilities, worth USD 8.45 million.
