Bangladesh reports strong winter vegetable volumes in Khulna

The Khulna region has recorded winter vegetable production valued at Tk 2,858.83 crore, equal to about US$260 million, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension. Officials attribute the volumes to weather conditions, seed supply, and technical support from government agencies and NGOs. Vegetables from the Khulna DAE Zone, which includes Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, and Narail, are supplied to domestic markets and exported.

Producers report steady demand for pesticide-free vegetables, and a stable marketing network is enabling movement into Dhaka and other areas. Winter crops dominate field production, including bottle gourd, hyacinth bean, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, chilli, red amaranth, radish greens, and spinach. Growers remain engaged in irrigation and crop management as the season progresses.

In Dumuria Upazila, award-winning farmer Abu Hanif Morol said, "Cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage, tomato, bean, brinjal, red amaranth – everything has yielded well and the prices are good." Farmer Mofiz Mia cultivated beans, tomatoes, and kohlrabi on six bighas, equal to roughly 0.78 hectares. "The yield and prices are both satisfactory. Dumuria's vegetables are now being exported abroad, which makes us proud," he said.

Local representatives reported continued access to seeds, fertilizers, training, and technical advice. Abdul Halim of Kharnia Union said, "As a result, bumper production is being achieved. With toxin-free vegetables now being exported, Dumuria has become a model for the country."

The Khulna DAE zone recorded 714,707 tons of winter vegetables from 30,365 hectares this season, averaging 23.54 tons per hectare. District results include 176,022 tons from 8,335 hectares in Khulna, 251,252 tons from 9,200 hectares in Bagerhat, 213,180 tons from 9,690 hectares in Satkhira, and 74,073 tons from 3,140 hectares in Narail. For 2025–26, the production target is 729,305 tons from 30,011 hectares.

Additional Director Md Rafiqul Islam said vegetables from the zone supply Dhaka and other regions after meeting local needs. He noted that two-thirds of the harvest has been completed, and the remainder is expected by early December.
