Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions:

"There is quite a bit of supply coming onto the onion market at the moment"

"If you look at other outdoor products, such as potatoes, cabbages, carrots, and onions, they manage to stand out well with strong exports, because an enormous volume has been leaving in recent weeks, which is very positive," says Tjerk Nagel of Konaxx Onions from Sint-Jacobiparochie in Friesland.

"On the other hand, the harvest is also very large and the quality is not bad, but certainly not exceptional. Companies with electronic sorting may have fewer issues, but even then, it is not easy to sort a good batch of onions," says Tjerk. "Overall, quality will become a challenge. Added to this is the fact that we do not have the Poles as the broom wagon this year. They provided a cleaning effect for the lower-end lots in previous seasons, but they are not showing up now."

"We are seeing quite a bit of supply being released at the moment. I understand that, because if you have a batch of onions and you are not entirely confident about the quality, you can still sell it for reasonable money now, and that becomes uncertain in January or February. Around 17 cents is being paid to growers at the moment. You cannot pay more than that either, because although the bale price is stable, it also feels increasingly under pressure."
