The Ministry of Agriculture and growers have started the national grape harvest, reporting yields of about 4,000 boxes per hectare, which is described as roughly double the international average. The government-led initiative began in Montecristi, later expanded to Pedro Corto in San Juan, and is now evaluating additional production areas across the southern region and other parts of the Dominican Republic.
Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz said the quality of Dominican grapes has drawn interest from companies in France, Spain, and Italy, as well as other countries, for use in wines, ciders, and other grape-based raw materials. The San Juan project covers approximately 18 hectares planted with Timpson and Sweet Celebration seedless varieties, with fruit destined for domestic distribution and export markets.
Producer Alberto RamÃrez said they are already supplying national supermarkets and several U.S. cities.
