Mexico starts construction of refrigerated avocado logistics hub

Cross-border agricultural trade between Mexico and the United States is expected to increase with the start of construction on a 110,000-square-foot refrigerated logistics center in Pharr, Texas. The project forms part of the RioPlex Tour Michoacán initiative, which aims to strengthen regional economic links.

At the groundbreaking event, the company's president described the development as "the foundation of a dream that was born from the effort, trust, and vision of many people," and referred to the facility as "a strategic point to connect our fields with new markets." He also noted his personal motto: "Believe in yourself and anything is possible."

The cold-storage hub is being developed in two phases and will include more than 30 loading docks, high-capacity refrigeration systems, and 6,700 square feet of mezzanine office space. It is designed to support the distribution of avocados from Michoacán and other perishable commodities moving into the U.S. market.

Local officials highlighted the project's role within the region's transport and trade network. The program host stated that RioPlex represents "a region that combines vision, innovation, and opportunities," while emphasising the participation of business representatives from Uruapan, a major production zone.

The mayor of Pharr said the development aligns with broader investments in mobility and trade infrastructure. "In the City of Pharr, we are always interested in business, but business for the world," he said. He cited more than US$500 million invested in upgrades in the area and added, "Time is money for you, and we know that, and that is why we are investing millions of dollars."

A representative of the economic development corporation described the initiative as an example of the type of integrated supply-chain activity promoted in the region, noting that Pharr is "the best place to establish, expand, or simply launch your entry into the United States to be successful as a company."

Regional logistics leaders pointed to the confidence placed in the Rio Grande Valley's infrastructure. They also referenced recent economic tours aimed at showcasing the area's assets, including ports, transport facilities, and industrial developments.

An update was provided on the Pharr International Bridge modernisation. The bridge director said the expansion is "73 to 75% complete" and expected to be operational in February 2026. The redesigned layout will double operational capacity by dedicating one structure to inbound and the new span to outbound traffic. The bridge remains "the number one bridge for the entire perishables sector," with agricultural volumes rising by 3% per year. New FAST lanes are intended to reduce wait times for certified cargo.

Ceremonial activities, including the laying of the first stone and a blessing, closed the event. Throughout the program, speakers noted that the logistics center is expected to support regional supply-chain reliability, create employment, and facilitate expanded access to the U.S. fresh-produce market.
