The U.S. strengthens its leadership in the global avocado market

The United States avocado market has solidified its position as the primary driver of global sector growth, maintaining a leading role in avocado consumption. According to IQonsulting's "Avocado Market Yearbook," North America, primarily led by the United States, accounted for approximately 34% of the global Hass avocado market in 2024, underscoring the country's strategic importance for international exporters.

Per capita avocado consumption in the United States is approximately 4 kilograms per year, indicating the significant role the fruit plays in the national diet. This information was shared during the launch of an INIA technical bulletin in August 2025.

The worldwide avocado market was valued at roughly $20 billion in 2024 and is expected to continue growing. The Hass variety made up $15.7 billion of this in 2025. The U.S. remains the market leader due to its high consumption levels and its proximity to Mexico, the world's top producer.

A recent retail trend is the increasing demand for smaller avocados. U.S. consumers are increasingly choosing these sizes, prompting retailers to increase promotions of small avocados by 242.7% during recent festive weeks. This change reflects a diversification in buying preferences and more flexible stock management by supermarkets.

The U.S. market stays highly competitive. Mexico continues to hold its top spot, while South American countries, such as Peru, are experiencing substantial growth in exports to the United States. Peruvian avocados are renowned for their high quality, particularly when their dry matter content exceeds 23%, which is crucial for staying competitive in a challenging market.

The sector also faces the challenge of maintaining fruit quality on a global level. This has led to the adoption of post-harvest technologies, such as controlled atmosphere packaging, which prolongs the fruit's shelf life and helps reduce waste.
