Cocaine found in Ecuadorian banana shipment in Greece

Greek authorities have seized more than 39 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a shipping container carrying bananas at the port of Piraeus, according to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

The drugs were hidden in 34 improvised packages inside the external refrigeration unit of the container, which arrived from Ecuador and contained 1,080 cartons of bananas. The seized cocaine has an estimated street value of over US$1.1 million.

The interception was the result of targeted inspections and risk assessments conducted by AADE's newly formed Anti-Narcotics Department, working jointly with the Piraeus Customs Anti-Smuggling Unit and the Organized Crime Anti-Narcotics Division.

The authorities did not disclose whether any arrests have been made in connection with the shipment, and investigations are ongoing.
