Uzbekistan has announced plans to expand its fruit-growing sector through the creation of 3,000 hectares of new industrial orchards as part of a nationwide agricultural development program. An additional 6,000 hectares of unused farmland will also be offered for lease via public auctions.
The initiative, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, is designed to increase productivity, modernize farming practices, and make better use of land resources. Implementation will take place in 30 selected districts across the country, with each area hosting an orchard of around 50 hectares.
Scientific and technical coordination will be provided by Uzagrostar Holding, a state-owned company specializing in agronomic research and consulting. Before planting begins, Uzagrostar experts will conduct detailed soil and water assessments to determine suitable crops and varieties. The data will support the creation of a national seed and seedling bank containing high-yield and regionally adapted fruit species.
The orchards will focus on commercial fruit production using intensive growing systems, modern irrigation technologies, and efficient resource management. Special attention will be given to drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting, aimed at reducing water use in arid regions while maintaining yield stability.
The program also includes training sessions for farmers and orchard managers, focusing on pruning, pest management, post-harvest handling, and international production standards. Local specialists will collaborate with agronomists from other countries to introduce best practices in orchard management and sustainable fruit production.
To encourage investment, 6,000 hectares of idle agricultural land will be made available through the E-auksion online platform. The land will be open to lease by Uzbek citizens and companies, including those with foreign participation. New operators will be free to select the crops most suitable for their soil and market needs, promoting diversification and export growth.
Uzbekistan is already one of the leading producers and exporters of stone fruit, particularly apricots. The establishment of new industrial orchards is expected to further strengthen the country's position in regional and global fruit markets.
