Stable prices bring relief to Kashmir apple growers

Apple growers in Sopore and Bandipora have reported stable market rates this season, bringing relief after several years of price fluctuations.

At Sopore Fruit Mandi, one of Asia's largest fruit markets, traders said demand for Kashmiri apples remains firm, with rates ranging between US$12 and US$18 per box depending on variety and grade. Growers attributed the better returns to improved fruit quality and consistent demand from domestic buyers.

"After two difficult years, we are finally getting fair returns for our hard work," said Mohammad Yousuf, an orchardist from Dangiwacha. "The rates are stable, and buyers from Delhi, Punjab, and Maharashtra are showing good interest."

Despite the improved situation, growers and traders have urged authorities to address transport-related bottlenecks, particularly congestion on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway. "The delay in transportation affects fruit freshness and causes losses. We request authorities to ensure smooth passage for apple-laden trucks," said Bilal Ahmad, a trader at Sopore Mandi.

Growers also called for increased investment in cold storage capacity and subsidies for packaging materials to strengthen post-harvest management. "If logistics are improved, Kashmir's apple industry can contribute much more to the economy," they added.

Officials from the Horticulture Department said that efforts are underway to improve transport systems and expand post-harvest infrastructure under the government's horticulture development program.
