A reusable plastic half pallet originally introduced in the United Kingdom is now being adopted across Europe for use in beverage and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) logistics. Developed by Tosca, the UDP half pallet is designed as a retail-ready solution aimed at improving efficiency in transport, storage, and in-store merchandising.

The UDP half pallet, measuring 800 × 600 mm, is built for repeated use and has a load capacity of up to 500 kg. It is intended to simplify product handling from production to the retail floor while reducing manual labour and transport costs. Its smaller footprint allows for greater flexibility in stores with limited shelf space and can be used alongside quarter pallets to optimise layout options.

According to Tosca, the design allows goods to move directly from the truck to the shop floor without repacking, reducing time and handling requirements. Integrated pop-up locators help stabilise products and prevent damage during display. The lightweight, durable design also contributes to workplace safety by reducing strain and repetitive movement for retail staff.
In the UK, the half pallet has been adopted by major retailers and FMCG companies, particularly for beverage distribution. It is used with reusable trays to create complete, retail-ready displays intended to streamline replenishment and maintain presentation standards. European retailers are now trialling the system across various sectors, with interest growing as companies seek alternatives to single-use packaging and prepare for new EU regulations such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

Independent assessments indicate that reusing the UDP half pallet can reduce carbon emissions by 400–600 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per 100 product displays compared to single-use setups. The pallet is fully recyclable and designed to fit into circular economy models, with the goal of combining logistical efficiency with reduced environmental impact.
